Specialist EUPD & Disordered Eating Service
Supporting adults with Emotionally Unstable Personality Disorder (EUPD) and co-existing disordered eating within a specialist therapeutic environment
About Southern Hill Hospital
Southern Hill Hospital provides specialist inpatient care and treatment for adults with a range of complex mental health needs. Set within a large, spacious site in a rural setting, the hospital is arranged across separate buildings and wards, enabling different areas of the hospital to provide environments specifically designed around the needs of the people they support.
Within Southern Hill Hospital, Adler Ward is a dedicated eight-bed specialist service for adults with Emotionally Unstable Personality Disorder (EUPD) whose presentation includes disordered eating alongside complex mental health needs. The smaller ward environment enables the team to provide highly individualised care and treatment within a structured and supportive therapeutic setting.

Every referral is considered individually to understand the person's presentation, risks, physical and mental health needs and treatment goals.
Our Therapeutic Approach
Treatment is based around an individual understanding of each person's experiences, strengths, difficulties and aspirations.
Our therapeutic approach draws on Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Schema Therapy and trauma-informed approaches, alongside Occupational Therapy, tailored to the needs of each individual.
The multidisciplinary team works collaboratively with each individual to develop a personalised treatment plan, with a focus on understanding the relationship between emotions, thoughts, behaviours and disordered eating.
Individuals are supported to develop practical strategies for managing distress, regulating emotions and reducing reliance on behaviours that may previously have helped them cope.
Disordered Eating Support
Our approach recognises that disordered eating is rarely experienced in isolation. For someone living with EUPD, their relationship with food and eating may become closely connected with emotional regulation, control, self-worth, identity, trauma or other forms of emotional distress.
Treatment therefore considers both the disordered eating and the wider emotional and psychological needs of the individual. Support helps people explore the patterns and triggers associated with their eating behaviours, understand how these may have developed as ways of coping, and identify healthier and more sustainable strategies for managing difficult thoughts and feelings.
Alongside psychological and therapeutic support, the team considers the individual's physical health and nutritional wellbeing, ensuring these remain an integral part of their overall treatment and recovery.
Our person-centred and trauma-informed approach focuses on helping each individual develop greater emotional stability, healthier coping strategies and a more positive relationship with themselves, food and everyday life.
Multidisciplinary Care
Individuals are supported by an experienced Multidisciplinary Team (MDT), bringing together the different professional perspectives required to understand and respond to complex needs.
The team can include:
Consultant Psychiatrist
Doctors
Registered Mental Health and General Nurses
Psychologists
Occupational Therapists
Healthcare and support colleagues
The MDT regularly reviews progress, risk and treatment goals, adapting the individual's care and therapeutic programme as their needs change.
Occupational Therapy & Meaningful Activity
Recovery also means developing the confidence and practical skills needed for life beyond hospital.
Occupational Therapy supports individuals to establish meaningful routines, develop practical coping strategies and participate in activities that reflect their interests and goals.
This can include developing everyday living skills, vocational activity, community engagement and rebuilding confidence in activities that may have become difficult because of their mental health.
Working Towards Recovery
From admission, we work with each individual to identify and agree personal recovery goals, reflecting what they want to achieve during their time with us. Progress towards these goals is regularly reviewed using standardised outcome measures, helping both the individual and the team recognise achievements and identify the next steps in their recovery.
Our aim is to support each person towards a life that feels safer, more stable, independent and meaningful.
Treatment can focus on:
Developing emotional regulation skills
Understanding triggers and patterns of behaviour
Reducing harmful coping strategies
Developing a healthier relationship with food and eating
Building confidence and self-esteem
Developing and maintaining relationships
Increasing independence and everyday living skills
Managing risk more positively
Preparing for greater independence and community living
Progress is regularly reviewed with the individual using standardised outcome measures, providing clear evidence of progress towards their agreed recovery goals. This ensures that discharge and the next stage of their pathway remain an active part of treatment from the outset, with a clear focus on what they are working towards and the steps needed to achieve it.
Families, Professionals & Future Planning
Where appropriate and with the individual's involvement and consent, the team works closely with families, carers, commissioners and community professionals.
Planning for the future begins early, helping ensure that progress made during admission can be maintained beyond hospital and that appropriate support is identified for the next stage of the person's recovery.
Referrals
We welcome referrals and enquiries from NHS commissioners, Integrated Care Boards, mental health teams and other health and social care professionals.
Each referral is assessed individually by the clinical team to determine whether Southern Hill Hospital can safely and appropriately meet the person's needs and treatment goals.
